A documented effect of tesamorelin is a reduction in visceral adipose tissue in some study populations. Researchers have reported decreases in trunk fat measured by computed tomography alongside changes in lipid markers. The mechanism is thought to involve growth hormone-mediated lipolysis, though the precise contribution of direct versus indirect pathways is not fully resolved. Studies have generally examined defined groups over finite periods, so long-term outcomes are less well characterized. Findings have not been uniform across all trials.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH). Its sequence corresponds to the 44-amino-acid form of human GHRH with a trans-3-hexenoyl group attached to the N-terminal tyrosine. This modification slows enzymatic cleavage and extends the peptide's activity relative to the native hormone. The compound is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis and supplied as a lyophilized powder. Researchers classify it as a GHRH receptor agonist. Its structure places it in the same family as other growth hormone secretagogues that act on the pituitary.
Binding of tesamorelin to GHRH receptors on pituitary somatotroph cells triggers cyclic AMP signaling and the release of growth hormone into circulation. Because the peptide acts upstream of the growth hormone axis, its effects are partly mediated by hepatic insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) production. The pulsatile character of endogenous growth hormone secretion is preserved rather than replaced. Whether amplified signaling produces effects beyond those of native GHRH remains an area of ongoing investigation.
Stimulated growth hormone release leads to hepatic production of insulin-like growth factor 1, a key mediator of many growth hormone effects. In clinical studies, tesamorelin increased IGF-1 levels in a dose-dependent manner, although the response varies among individuals. The drug's effect on visceral fat is thought to involve growth hormone-mediated lipolysis and altered adipocyte metabolism. Muscle mass and lean body mass have also been assessed as secondary outcomes, but changes are generally smaller and less consistent than fat reductions.
Pharmacodynamic studies show that tesamorelin reduces visceral adipose tissue more than subcutaneous adipose tissue in the studied population. This selectivity may relate to differences in blood flow and hormone sensitivity between fat depots. Effects on glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity have been investigated, with some trials reporting modest changes and others showing stability. The precise relationship between growth hormone exposure, IGF-1 levels, and visceral fat loss remains an active area of analysis.
Tesamorelin binds to growth hormone-releasing hormone receptors on somatotroph cells in the anterior pituitary. Receptor activation increases intracellular cyclic AMP and promotes synthesis and secretion of growth hormone. Because the peptide mimics endogenous GHRH, it amplifies the normal pulsatile release of growth hormone rather than providing exogenous growth hormone directly. This upstream action distinguishes tesamorelin from recombinant growth hormone preparations and from growth hormone secretagogues that act at different receptors.

Tesamorelin occupies a narrow position among agents that act on the growth hormone axis. Unlike growth hormone itself, which is given as replacement, it stimulates the pituitary to release the hormone in pulses, so the downstream increase in insulin-like growth factor 1 depends on intact somatotroph function. Other peptides in the same family include shorter GHRH fragments and synthetic secretagogues with different stability profiles. Several points remain unresolved, including whether the reduction in visceral fat translates into fewer cardiovascular events, what happens to metabolic markers after long-term use, and how the drug compares with lifestyle or surgical approaches.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide that belongs to the growth hormone-releasing hormone family and contains the same forty-four amino acid sequence as endogenous GHRH, extended at the amino terminus by a trans-3-hexenoyl group. That small fatty acid modification protects the peptide from rapid cleavage by dipeptidyl peptidase-4, the enzyme that shortens the half-life of native GHRH to only a few minutes. Chemically the compound is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis, purified by chromatography, and supplied as a sterile lyophilized powder for reconstitution.
Identity and purity are assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the peptide from related impurities. Mass spectrometry, often coupled to liquid chromatography, confirms molecular mass and detects chemical modifications. Peptide mapping and amino acid analysis can verify sequence integrity. Water content is measured by Karl Fischer titration, and residual solvents may be checked by gas chromatography. These methods together support batch-to-batch consistency and routine quality control.
Lyophilized tesamorelin is generally stored refrigerated at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius. The solid form is comparatively stable when kept dry and protected from light. Moisture uptake can promote aggregation and degradation, so sealed containers with desiccant are common. Researchers typically avoid repeated temperature cycling, which may stress the peptide. Documentation accompanying reference materials usually specifies a shelf life under these conditions.
Clinical study of tesamorelin has centered on adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy, a condition in which abdominal fat accumulates while peripheral fat is lost. In controlled trials, treated participants showed reductions in visceral adipose tissue measured by imaging, alongside modest shifts in some lipid values. Effects on subcutaneous fat were smaller and less consistent across studies. Whether these changes translate into fewer cardiovascular events remains an open question, because the trials were not designed or powered to answer it.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide that acts as an analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone, a natural hypothalamic signal. Its sequence corresponds to the forty-four amino acid form of the human hormone, with a small acyl group attached near the amino terminus. That modification slows enzymatic breakdown and extends the time the peptide remains active in circulation. The compound was developed as a pharmacological way to raise endogenous growth hormone output rather than supplying the hormone directly.
After injection, the peptide binds receptors on somatotroph cells in the anterior pituitary. Receptor activation raises intracellular cyclic AMP and triggers release of stored growth hormone into the bloodstream. Because the compound works through the body's own regulatory system, growth hormone pulses retain much of their normal feedback control. Repeated administration also raises insulin-like growth factor 1, a hormone produced mainly in the liver. Investigators treat that rise as a marker that the pituitary axis has been engaged.
Stability testing examines how the molecule changes under controlled stress. Thermal stress, light exposure, and extremes of pH are applied separately so that each degradation route can be attributed to a specific cause. The main observed changes are oxidation, deamidation, and aggregation into dimers or higher-order species. Accelerated studies at elevated temperature are used to estimate behavior over longer periods, though such extrapolation carries uncertainty. For a lyophilized powder, residual moisture and the choice of bulking agent strongly influence how quickly these changes appear.
Practical handling centers on limiting moisture, oxygen, and temperature excursions. Lyophilized material is generally held at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius, protected from light and kept sealed until use. Once reconstituted, solutions are typically kept cold and used within a short window because hydrolysis and microbial growth both accelerate in liquid form. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided, since they promote aggregation. Vial contents should be inspected for particulates and clarity before analysis, and working aliquots are prepared to reduce the number of times the stock is opened.
Quantitation of the peptide relies mainly on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, typically at 214 nanometers, where the peptide bond absorbs. Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry, most often electrospray ionization coupled to liquid chromatography, and by peptide mapping after enzymatic digestion. Because related impurities differ only slightly in sequence or modification, method development emphasizes resolution rather than speed. Purity is usually reported as a percentage of the main peak area, with individual impurities listed separately when they exceed a defined reporting threshold.
The rattlesnake became a symbolic animal for the Colonials during the Revolutionary War period, and is depicted prominently on the Gadsden Flag. It continues to be used as a symbol by the United States military, and political movements within the United States.
=== Gaining strength === Liu Wenhui took advantage of the Sichuanese conflicts to gain power. In 1924, he gave financial support to Liu Xiang and Yang Sen in their campaign to oust Xiong Kewu's forces; in return, the two warlords allowed him to take control of a part of the defeated Xiong's army and territories. In October 1925, after Yang Sen's defeat in a military conflict, Liu again incorporated part of the losing party's armies and territories, expanding his influence to Meishan and Leshan. Chief Executive Duan Qirui also appointed him as the Assistant Military Affairs Commissioner for Sichuan. When his former commander Chen Hongfan was attacked by Yang Sen's forces, Liu offered him no help and even refused an appeal by Leng Yingdong to let Chen serve in his government. Instead, Liu absorbed Chen's remaining forces; Chen subsequently returned to Dayi County in disgrace and reportedly went mad. During the May Thirtieth Movement, students in Yibin staged a boycott of British goods and clashed with British merchants. Liu Wenhui's military police arrested the student leaders, sparking outrage, but Liu met with the students and made an anti-imperialist speech mentioning his connections to the patriot Jiang Baili. To prove that his prisoners were not being tortured, Liu let demonstrators observe that they were playing basketball in the prison courtyard. In the wake of the Northern Expedition and the First United Front, Liu began flirting with progressive ideas. Around 1926, Liu appointed Communist Party member Liu Yuan'an as one of his senior advisors.
=== Surgery === A minimally invasive surgical therapy called serial ultrasound-guided aspiration can be performed to treat breast mastitis in an outpatient setting, achieving a better cosmetic postoperative recovery. On the other side, nipple pain caused by tongue-tie can seek a surgical therapy called frenotomy on infants. In this surgery, the frenulum under the tongue will be clipped to improve latch and remove the restriction of tongue movement. Hence, breastfeeding efficiency can be improved. However, it may not instantly relieve nipple pain since infants probably have developed uncommon tongue movements.
Playground equipment constructed during the Cold War was intended to foster children's curiosity and excitement about the Space Race. It was installed in both Communist and non-Communist countries throughout the Cold War.

=== Chemical synthesis === The demand for vanilla flavoring has long exceeded the supply of vanilla beans. As of 2001, the annual demand for vanillin was 12,000 tons, but only 1,800 tons of natural vanillin were produced. The remainder was produced by chemical synthesis. Vanillin was first synthesized from eugenol (found in oil of clove) in 1874–75, less than 20 years after it was first identified and isolated. Vanillin was commercially produced from eugenol until the 1920s. Later it was synthesized from lignin-containing "brown liquor", a byproduct of the sulfite process for making wood pulp. Counterintuitively, though it uses waste materials, the lignin process is no longer popular because of environmental concerns, and today most vanillin is produced from guaiacol. Several routes exist for synthesizing vanillin from guaiacol. At present, the most significant of these is the two-step process practiced by Rhodia since the 1970s, in which guaiacol (1) reacts with glyoxylic acid by electrophilic aromatic substitution. The resulting vanillylmandelic acid (2) is then converted by 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylglyoxylic acid (3) to vanillin (4) by oxidative decarboxylation.
== Career and contributions == After receiving his Ph.D., Nasatir taught Latin American History for one year at the University of Iowa. Beginning in 1927, taught for 50 years at San Diego State University. In 1986 SDSU named a wing of its social sciences building in his honor, along with a named endowed chair in the SDSU History department. Nasatir was the recipient of four Fulbright fellowships, and traveled to France, Spain and Chile for research. He published 19 books, and is credited with publishing some 300,000 pages of documents, studies and translations. He was named Distinguished Professor of the California State College System. He received the Henry R. Wagner Medal of Honor. He presided over the international chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, an international history honor society. In 1985 Nasatir's house was among those destroyed in the Normal Heights fire, along with 500,000 documents and 2,500 books in his possession. Although this was a truly significant loss, Nasatir had published or used extensively as sources in publication such a large percentage of the documents he had in his possession that the loss was not as devastating as it would have otherwise been. Some of his papers ended up being restored through a freeze-drying salvage process.
This remains a highly contested topic in the academic literature due to disagreements about whether the nocebo effect may play a role, whether self-report questionnaires are reliable for this data, and whether enough objective evidence exists to conclude these effects are persistent after discontinuation of the drug. The Post-Finasteride Syndrome Foundation (PFSF) was created with a medical advisory board to study the topic (finasteride is a similar 5α-reductase inhibitor) and lawsuits alleging harm from the drug are ongoing. Concerns from the PFSF and other patient advocates led the FDA to add a black-box warning to Finasteride for possible risks of suicide in June 2022. Some experts have questioned the basis of the black-box warning, given that it relies on anecdotal patient-reported outcomes rather than prospective trials. Indeed, a 2024 meta analysis of more than 2.2 million patients suggested no causal link between the drug and neurological side effects.
=== Unknown date === Eight marine reservists were investigated for abuse and the death of a prisoner, outside Nasiriyah. A photograph leaked after the initial set shows Spc. Sabrina Harman smiling and giving a thumbs up next to the body of Manadel al-Jamadi. Jamadi was reportedly beaten to death during interrogations in the prison's showers. Death certificates repeatedly stated that prisoners had died "while sleeping", and of "natural reasons". Iraqi doctors are not allowed to investigate the deaths of prisoners, even if death certificates are allegedly forged. No investigations against US military doctors who are alleged to have forged death certificates have been reported.
== Functions of aquatic plants == One of the largest aquatic plants in the world is the Bolivian waterlily, which holds the Guinness World Record of having the largest undivided leaf at 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in) diameter; the smallest is the rootless duckweed, which is only 1 mm (0.039 in) across. Many small animals use aquatic plants such as duckweeds and lily pads for spawning or as protective shelters against predators both from above and below the water surface. Aquatic plants are important primary producers and are the basis of food web for many aquatic fauna, especially wetland species. They compete with phytoplanktons for excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, thus reducing the prevalence of eutrophication and harmful algal blooms, and have a significant effect on riparian soil chemistry as their leaves, stems and roots slow down the water flow, capture sediments and trap pollutants. Excess sediment will settle into the stream bed due to the reduced flow rates, and some aquatic plants also have symbiotic microbes capable of nitrogen fixation and breaking down the pollutants trapped and/or absorbed by the roots. Historically, aquatic plants have been less studied than terrestrial plants, and management of aquatic vegetation has become an increasingly interested field as means to reduce agricultural pollution of water bodies.

It mirrors the 44-residue form of human growth hormone-releasing hormone. A hexenoyl group on the N-terminal tyrosine distinguishes it from the unmodified hormone. The change is intended to improve resistance to enzymatic breakdown.
The N-terminal modification reduces cleavage by circulating peptidases, so the peptide persists longer than native GHRH. That persistence is the main rationale for the synthetic design. Comparative half-life values in humans are reported in regulatory review documents rather than in general reference literature.
Reductions in visceral adipose tissue have been measured in controlled studies of defined populations. Whether the effect generalizes to other groups and persists after treatment stops is less clear. Longer-term outcome data remain limited.
It targets the growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor on pituitary somatotroph cells. Binding stimulates cyclic AMP signaling and growth hormone secretion. This is the same receptor used by endogenous GHRH.
